Suharto dies

January 27, 2008 - 5:27PM

Indonesia’s former president Suharto, who ruled with an iron fist for 32 years, has died, a senior police official told reporters on Sunday at the hospital where he was being treated. He was 86

“Indonesia’s second president Haji Muhammad Suharto has passed away at about 1.10pm (5.10pm AEDT),” Major Dicky Sondani told reporters.

Reporters saw relatives of the family crying and said that members of Indonesia’s special forces arrived at the hospital.

Suharto’s condition had deteriorated overnight prompting his six children to gather at his bedside in the Jakarta hospital, one of his close aides said.

His doctors said earlier today that Suharto had suffered multiple organ failure overnight and had been resuscitated, although he was still unconscious.

Suharto suffered his first multiple organ failure a week after he was admitted to hospital with heart, lung and kidney problems, but had rallied in recent days, with doctors surprised at his ability to recover.

Indonesia’s former dictator Soeharto, a five star general and mystic who ruled the world’s most populous Muslim nation for 32 often tumultuous years, has died in a Jakarta hospital. He was 86.

“Our former president HM Soeharto has passed away around 13:10 (1710 AEDT),” Dicky Sondani, the sub-district police chief, told reporters at the hospital.

He declined to elaborate, including on the cause of death.

Ex-Indonesian dictator Suharto dies
By ANTHONY DEUTSCH, Associated Press Writer

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Former dictator Suharto, an army general who crushed Indonesia’s communist movement and pushed aside the country’s founding father to usher in 32 years of tough rule that saw up to a million political opponents killed, died Sunday. He was 86.

Suharto had been ailing in a hospital in the capital since Jan. 4 when he was admitted with failing kidneys, heart and lungs. Doctors prolonged his life through dialysis and a ventilator, but his condition dramatically worsened over the weekend and he lost consciousness and stopped breathing on his own late Saturday.

A statement issued by chief presidential doctor, Marjo Subiandono, said he was declared dead at 1:10 p.m. The cause of death was given as multi-organ failure.

Finally toppled by mass street protests in 1998, the U.S. Cold War ally’s departure opened the way for democracy in this predominantly Muslim nation of 235 million people and he withdrew from public life, rarely venturing from his comfortable villa on a leafy lane in the capital.

Suharto had ruled with a totalitarian dominance that saw soldiers stationed in every village, instilling a deep fear of authority across this Southeast Asian nation of some 6,000 inhabited islands that stretch across more than 3,000 miles.

Butt littering: be wise

Puntung rokok.
