Coffee News from Africa

Making news from Africa. Uganda exported coffee with 48% go up within one year in 3 million bags of coffee. Meanwhile, Rwanda hosts Cup of Excellence award 2008.

Montly report in July, 2008 from The Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) shows a sums of 3.08 million bags of coffee were exported begin August, 2007 to July, 2008 as compared to 2.6 million bags in same period in 2006/2007.

That report also indicates that in the last ten months coffee year (October 2007 to July 2008)  there is rise of 16%.

They all show that a total of 2,674,283 bags worth $320 million were exported, compared to $214 million coffee worth exported in a same period last year.

The report of UCDA also indicates big rise of volume and value of Uganda’s coffee exports for the month of July 2008 where 32,508,000 bags worth $42 million.

The total coffee exports, Robusta coffee was over 289,600 bags worth $36 million and Arabica was 35,398 bags worth $5 million.

The Government of Rwanda hosts the firts ever Cup of Excellence award 2008. That award was prestigious award, the most esteemed award given to coffee farmer/coffee cupper.

24 Coffee chosen by a select group of national and international cuppers were presented with special awards. Rwandan cuppers Regina Niyonsaba and Claire Kampeta, together with other cuppers from UK, Sweden, Guatemala, Japan, and the USA, among others, graced the occasion.

The result, Multisector Investment Group Ltd (MIG) and FAKCO – Rulindo took first and second places respectively.The best 24 coffees, which scored 84% and above will be auctioned at a special session to be held on October 14 and could fetch as much as 40$ a kilo.

President Kagame said to the organizers and the coffee farmers that they have been in exceptional year for the crop. “Exercises such as these give us an opportunity to reflect on our country’s development agenda and the developments made towards achieving our vision,” President said.

The Executive Director of Alliance of the Coffee Cup of Excellence, Suzie Spindler, said “You Rwanda coffee farmers are today the envy of the African continent. This is a phenomenal case for a country that has been willing to push for excellence.” Suzie continous “The entire Rwandan coffee industry has done such a phenomenal job.”
