What goes in our mind when we talk about Australia coffee culture? There`s heaps and sometimes it just make us a bit shocked. First shocked comes when we realized that Starbucks the coffee chain, the inventor of coffee culture doesn`t impress Australia. Starbucks Asia Pacific president John Culver said that “Australia has a very sophisticated coffee culture.” Starbucks gave key reason behind decision: ”challenges unique to the Australian market”.
According to Chris Berg of The Age, it is because of the simple fact that Starbucks is selling the coffee culture and NOT the coffee itself. He writes:
So why has Starbucks worked in the US but largely failed in Australia? The secret of the company’s success in the American market wasn’t that it sold coffee. It sold coffee culture.
But when Starbucks came to Australia to bring coffee and the cafe culture to the masses, it found that we already had it. Particularly in Melbourne, we have better coffee and more relaxing cafes than anything that Starbucks brought with it.
Undeterred, the firm simply dumped what seemed to work in America into this country. When Starbucks opened an outlet in Lygon Street — a store that has since sat empty surrounded by bustling cafes — it became an amazing example of just how comprehensively a company could fail to understand its target market.
Now it`s clearly that Australia want their own delicious, coffee taste. And that was truly Australia coffee culture. It is not Sorry day last time said by Kevin Rudd, the Prime Minister.
Now let`s talk about technical issue about coffee. There`s also another difference with others country.
When it comes to ordering a coffee, Australians use a language which may be incomprehensible to many international visitors. So it’s worth knowing some of the local lingo:
A Flat White is the same as a cappuccino (without the froth and chocolate on top)
A Short Black is an espresso shot
A Long Black is espresso shot with added hot water
A Skinny Cap is a cappuccino made with skim milk, rather than full cream milk
A Latte is an espresso shot with lots of hot milk
A Skinny Decaf Latte is low on fat and caffeine
A Double Shot Soy Latte is double strength coffee with soy milk, rather than cow’s milk
A Babycino is just the frothy milk – no coffee. Usually ordered for children and served in an espresso cup.
